Is Dussehra 2026 on October 20 or October 21?

Dussehra 2026 will be celebrated on 20 October. Vijayadashami is celebrated on the day when dashami tithi is present in the afternoon (aparahna) segment of the day.

According to the above rule, in 2026, the dashami tithi will be present in the afternoon segment of 20 October, 2026 before aparahna begins. So, Dashami tithi will be present in the entire afternoon segment of 20 October. On 21 October, the tithi will end at 2.11 PM, which covers only the first hour of the afternoon segment. Hence, 20 October wins on tithi test.

20 October is also present with Shravana nakshatra in the afternoon and as per the tithi nirnaya tradition, dashami tithi is preferred to be celebrated on the day of Shravana nakshatra and hence, 20 October is confirmed.

Why does October 21 appear at all? Three reasons:

  • Sunrise-rule calculators. Some city-specific panchang tools apply the udaya tithi (sunrise) rule to every festival. Dashami is the tithi at sunrise on October 21, so those tools print that date. For Vijayadashami, the afternoon rule governs, not the sunrise rule.
  • Bengal’s calendar. West Bengal fixes Bijoya Dashami and Durga Visarjan by the Dashami tithi alone, which lands on October 21. The full explanation is in the Bengal section below.
  • Time zones. In eastern Australia, Dashami begins on Tuesday evening, after the afternoon window has passed, so Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra observe Wednesday, October 21.

Choosing between two dates is a tithi-nirnaya problem, and it is the first skill taught in any serious Vedic astrology course in india: you test a tithi against sunrise, midday and the festival’s prescribed window before you name a date.

What Are the Dashami Tithi Timings for Dussehra 2026?

The Dashami tithi of Ashwin Shukla Paksha begins on October 20th at 12:50 pm and ends on October 21st at 2:11 pm, covering a duration of 25 hours and 21 minutes.

A tithi defines a lunar day, and is dependent on the progress of the moon with respect to the sun. Each tithi spans 12 degrees of the gap. Due to the variation in the speed of the moon in its orbit, the duration of each tithi can fluctuate and range between 19-26 hours. Shukla Dashami is the tenth tithi of the waxing phase of the moon and Ashwin Shukla Dashami is tied to Vijayadashami.

Here is how the three days line up:

DateWhat the panchang shows
Sunday, October 18Ashtami begins at 8:27 AM
Monday, October 19Ashtami ends at 10:51 AM; Navami begins at 10:53 AM
Tuesday, October 20Navami ends around 12:50 PM; Dashami begins at 12:50 PM; Shravana nakshatra continues until 6:02 PM, then Dhanishtha begins
Wednesday, October 21Dashami ends at 2:11 PM

Tithi boundaries are computed from the Moon-Sun longitude difference, and the same arithmetic sits at the base of any Vedic astrology diploma course: students calculate the boundary by hand first, then confirm it against a panchang. Software only speeds up what the student already understands.

What Is the Vijay Muhurat on Dussehra 2026?

The Vijay Muhurat for Dussehra 2026 is 1:59 pm – 2:45 pm (aparahna muhurat), 46 minutes in duration, in New Delhi.

Vijay Muhurat is the time window for the Vijayadashami rituals, and new beginnings during this time are particularly auspicious. Vijayadashami along with Gudi Padwa, Akshaya Tritiya, and Bali Pratipada form the three and a half self-sufficient Muhurtas of the year (Sade Teen Muhurat). Out of these, Bali Pratipada falls during the amavasya, and does not permit new beginnings, thus for practicality, it is said that the three and a half self-sufficient Muhurtas, reduce to three. Vijayadashami along with Gudi Padwa and Akshaya Tritiya, permits new beginnings without the need to determine a separate Muhurat, and Vijay Muhurat defines the window for new beginnings during the day.

The window moves with the city, and is defined by the local sunrise and sunset times.

Muhurta selection is a full branch of Jyotish with its own rules for tithi, nakshatra, vara and lagna. Learners who want to practise it on their own schedule can build the skill in a Online vedic astrology course for beginners, working through real panchang dates like this one.

When Are Durga Ashtami and Maha Navami in 2026?

Durga Ashtami is on Sunday, October 18 or Monday, October 19, depending on the calendar, and Maha Navami is on Monday, October 19. The two dates for Ashtami exist because tithi timings and Navratri day-counts do not line up this year.

The Ashtami tithi runs from 8:27 AM on October 18 to 10:51 AM on October 19, and Navami begins two minutes later. Calendars that count Navratri by day number (Ghatasthapana on October 11 as day one) place Ashtami, the eighth day, on October 18. Panchang calendars that follow the tithi present at sunrise place Ashtami on October 19, because Ashtami is still running at sunrise on that Monday and Navami begins only at 10:53 AM.

Ashtami and Navami therefore sit almost back to back on October 19, and the key rituals compress into one morning:

  • Sandhi Puja: performed at the junction of the two tithis, covering the last 24 minutes of Ashtami and the first 24 minutes of Navami. It falls on Monday, October 19, from about 10:27 AM to 11:15 AM.
  • Kanya Pujan: most families hold it on October 19. Families who count Ashtami on October 18 keep it on that day instead; follow your family’s tradition.
  • Navratri parana: devotees who fast through Navami break the fast on Dashami, October 20. Many families break it earlier, after Navami havan and Kanya Pujan on October 19.

For the full nine-night schedule with the goddess for each day, see our Sharad Navratri 2026 dates and calendar.

What Is the Ravana Dahan Time on Dussehra 2026?

Ravana Dahan takes place on the evening of Tuesday, October 20, after sunset. The panchang does not calculate a single Ravana Dahan muhurat. Each Ramlila or Dussehra committee sets its own time, so the programme announced by your local committee is the only reliable clock.

Sunset in New Delhi on October 20 is at 5:46 PM. The 2026 announcements show how the timing varies by city:

CityAnnounced Ravana Dahan timing, October 20
Surat6:00 PM
Indore7:00 PM
Tinwari (Jodhpur district)After 7:00 PM
Rishikesh8:00 PM

Some places do not follow the October 20 evening pattern at all:

  • Gorakhpur (Aryanagar Ramlila): Ravana Vadh with fireworks on October 21 at 7 PM.
  • Mysuru: no Ravana Dahan. The Jamboo Savari procession is on October 21.
  • Kullu: the famous Kullu Dussehra begins on October 21 and runs through October 27, ending with Lanka Dahan.
  • Bengal and Odisha: the day is about Durga’s immersion, not effigies.

What the three effigies represent. Ravana is flanked by his brother Kumbhakarna and his son Meghnad (Indrajit). Ravana’s ten heads are read as ten inner faults: lust, anger, attachment, greed, pride, jealousy, ego, selfishness, cruelty and hatred. The practical lesson is to name one fault and let it burn with the effigy.

Why Is Dussehra Celebrated: Rama’s Victory or Durga’s?

Dussehra marks both the legends. Both legends are tied to a single tithi and a single message: after consistent effort, dharma wins over adharma.

In the Ramayana legend, Lord Rama, after worshipping the Goddess, killed Ravana on Dashami, thus ending the war and winning the right to take back Sita.

In the Devi Mahatmya legend, on the tenth day, after battling for nine days and nights, the Goddess, in the form of Durga, slayed Mahishasura and thus ended the war. Vijayadashami is hence celebrated on the tenth day after the nine days of Navratri.

There is also a legend that explains the shastra puja and shami tree. In the Mahabharata, on this tithi, the Pandavas retrieved their arms and armor which they had hidden in the shami tree during their exile, and then fought the war of the Kurukshetra. Shastra puja is celebrated in North and Central India with tilt toward the Rama legend, in West Bengal and Eastern India with tilt toward the Durga legend, and in South and West India with tilt toward new beginnings.

Why Does Bengal Celebrate Bijoya Dashami on October 21?

Bengal celebrates Bijoya Dashami on October 21, 2026. Drik Panchang states that in West Bengal, only the tithi of Dashami is considered for determining the day of Vijayadashami. Since, on October 21, 2026, Dashami tithi occurred during the early hours, Bijoya Dashami is celebrated on that day. The Kolkata calendar states that Maha Navami is on Tuesday, October 20, 2026 and Bijoya Dashami is on Wednesday, October 21, 2026.

On this day, (married) women offer vermilion to the Goddess in Devi Boron, and then play Sindoor Khela, smearing sindoor on one another. After the play, idols are taken for visarjan to Hooghly Ghat, including Babu Ghat and Prinsep Ghat the best-known sites. Neighbours greet each other with “Shubho Bijoya.”

The Bengal calendar and the all-India calendar are both correct for their own traditions. If you are in Kolkata, follow your puja committee’s panjika for the five puja days. If you want the Vijay Muhurat and Aparajita Puja, the afternoon of October 20 is the all-India answer, and the muhurat for Kolkata is 1:16 PM to 2:02 PM.

Is Dussehra on the Same Date Outside India?

Dussehra falls on October 20 in the United States, the UAE and most of the world, and on October 21 in eastern Australia.

  • United States: October 20 in every time zone. Dashami begins at 3:20 AM Eastern Time on October 20, so the afternoon window falls inside Dashami from the East Coast to Hawaii.
  • UAE: October 20, with the Vijay Muhurat in the early afternoon and the whole of Tuesday afternoon inside Dashami.
  • Eastern Australia: October 21 in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane, Adelaide and Hobart. Dashami begins at about 6:20 PM AEDT on Tuesday, after that day’s afternoon window.
  • Perth: October 20, where Dashami begins at 3:20 PM inside the afternoon window.

Do not convert India’s Vijay Muhurat into your own time zone. Use the muhurat for your city, or follow your local temple’s schedule.

What Does Vedic Astrology Say About Vijayadashami 2026?

In Vedic astrology, Vijayadashami 2026 combines three favourable markers: a Tuesday, Shravana nakshatra and a waxing-Moon Dashami. Read them as the tradition does, as indicators of the day’s quality, and treat them as teaching about the festival, not as predictions for any individual.

  • Tuesday (Mangala vara). Tuesday is ruled by Mars, the planet of courage, drive and competition. Traditional commentary links this vara to the victory theme of Vijayadashami.
  • Shravana nakshatra. Shravana is ruled by the Moon, presided over by Lord Vishnu, and its name points to hearing and learning. It lies entirely in Makara (Capricorn), so the Moon is in Capricorn through the afternoon of October 20. The nakshatra changes to Dhanishtha at 6:02 PM. Shravana’s association with learning is why Vidyarambham and new studies are favoured on this day.
  • Shukla paksha Dashami. The waxing fortnight carries growth, and the tenth tithi is the “victory” tithi.

These three are the day, nakshatra and tithi limbs of the five-limbed panchang. The remaining two limbs, yoga and karana, vary by location, so check them in a panchang for your city if you are selecting a muhurat for a specific purpose.

An individual’s own chart still matters. A festival muhurat describes the quality of the day for everyone, while the running dasha and transits describe the quality of the day for you.

How to Perform Dussehra Puja at Home (Step by Step)

Perform the main rituals during the Vijay Muhurat or the aparahna window, and keep the observance simple and sincere.

  1. Prepare. Bathe, wear clean clothes, and tidy the puja space. Lay out the tools of your work: books, laptop, instruments, vehicle keys, or tools.
  2. Take the sankalpa. Write one specific goal for the coming year on a sheet of paper and keep it near the altar. This turns the day into a commitment instead of a ritual only.
  3. Aparajita Puja. Worship Goddess Aparajita, the “unconquered” form of Shakti, with sandalwood paste, kumkum and blue aparajita (butterfly pea) flowers. Traditional practice places the worship in the north-east of the home.
  4. Shami Puja. Offer water, akshat and flowers to a Shami tree. If no tree is available, place a few Shami leaves on the altar. The traditional verse is:
It praises the Shami as the remover of sin and obstacles, the keeper of Arjuna’s bow and the beloved of Rama.
  5. Shastra Puja (Ayudha Puja). Apply tilak and offer flowers to your tools and instruments, with thanks for the work they make possible. In Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, this puja is centred on Maha Navami; follow your regional calendar.
  6. Seemollanghan and exchange of leaves. Step out past your threshold or boundary in the afternoon as a symbol of beginning a new journey, then offer Shami or apta leaves to elders and family as “gold,” with a wish for prosperity.
  7. Evening: Ravana Dahan. Watch the effigies burn at a local Ramlila ground, or burn one fault of your own on paper at home.

Common Dussehra 2026 Mistakes to Avoid

  • Treating the Vijay Muhurat as the Ravana Dahan time. The Vijay Muhurat is an afternoon window for puja and new beginnings. Ravana Dahan is an evening event after sunset.
  • Reading “October 21” from a sunrise-only calculator. Check that the tool applies the aparahna rule to Vijayadashami.
  • Using Delhi’s muhurat everywhere. Kolkata’s window starts 43 minutes before Delhi’s, and Mumbai’s starts 20 minutes after it.
  • Assuming one date for Ashtami. Navratri day-count calendars say October 18, and sunrise-tithi calendars say October 19. Pick one and follow it consistently.
  • Ignoring the regional calendar. Bengal, Mysuru and Kullu follow their own timelines.
  • Expecting a guarantee. A favourable muhurat supports an intention. It does not replace preparation, effort or a sound decision.

What Comes After Dussehra 2026?

The festival season continues quickly after Vijayadashami. Sharad Purnima falls on October 25, Karwa Chauth on October 29, Dhanteras on November 6 and Diwali on Sunday, November 8.
