bed position according to vastu

Which way does your bed face and where do you place it? These are the two essentials that determine if your bedroom is in accordance with Vastu Shastra. Your bed placement in Vastu Shastra is split into two parts. The first determines the placement of the bed in the room (the corner, against the wall, proximity to doors, and sitting under the beams) and the second is the direction of the bed. One important note is the placement of your bed is prior to the direction. Placing your bed in the southwest corner of the room (wall behind the head of the bed and nothing above it) will determine the easiest direction to face. This article discusses the optimal placement along with what to do when your room placement is suboptimal.

Because Vastu Shastra views the bedroom as a place for your nightly restoration, the placement of your bed follows the same philosophy as the placement of your kitchen and front entrance. A structured vastu shastra course online teaches you to read a floor plan this way for every room in the house, not just the bedroom, which is where the real value of learning Vastu as a system – rather than picking up isolated tips – starts to show.

Bed Position According to Vastu – The Core Rule (South-West Corner)

The foundational rule for bed position according to Vastu is this: the bed belongs in the south-west corner of the bedroom, with the headboard resting against either the south or the west wall.

This isn’t arbitrary. Vastu Shastra is built on the Pancha Mahabhuta – the five elements that govern the universe and, by extension, every space within a home:

ElementDirectionGoverns
Prithvi (Earth)South-WestStability, grounding, permanence
Agni (Fire)SouthPower, confidence, vitality
Vayu (Air)WestMovement, activity, ambition
Akasha (Space)EastExpansion, clarity, new beginnings
Apas (Water)NorthFlow, emotion, prosperity

The south-west quadrant has the most stable and heavy energy. That’s exactly the energy that a resting body needs. Because of this, the heaviest furniture like wardrobes or almirahs should be placed in this quadrant, and traditionally, the master bedroom is found here.

Another layer to this is often overlooked by articles. Vastu recommends two directions for the head when sleeping. For the magnetic alignment of the Earth, it is recommended to sleep with the head in the south direction, as deep and restful sleep is found when your body magnet fits Earth’s magnetic pole, and Vastu associates the south with the Earth’s magnetic pole. For beginnings and clarity, the other recommended direction for the head when sleeping is in the east. Because of this, it is most recommended for students and other people whose daily activities demand concentration.

A good course, in one sitting, can explain these layers in reasoning, which a checklist cannot. Rather than memorizing “South West is good”, the reasoning here can be fully understood. which is what a vastu shastra diploma course is designed to teach from the ground up.

Which Direction Should You Avoid When Sleeping?

Two head-facing directions are consistently discouraged in Vastu: north and west.

North is the most restricted direction to avoid. Your head carries your north pole magnet; you therefore disturb your sleep with restlessness, fatigue, and heart strain if you sleep with your head pointing north. Like all things, this direction is used in the process of death for people’s cremation, explaining why it is avoided for the living.

The West direction is not so restricted, but is the weakest of the four directions. It is associated with restlessness and a more active, and therefore less restful, sleep. It is not so restricted as the other directions; however, it is better to choose the South or East over the West.

If your room’s layout only provides you with a choice between the West or North directions, you will find the remedies later in this document. You are not out of options.

Common Bed Placement Mistakes (Beam, Door, Mirror, Diagonal Positioning)

Direction gets most of the attention, but placement mistakes inside the room cause just as much disruption to a bedroom’s energy. The four most common ones:

Sleeping under a beam or staircase. An overhead beam, a sloped ceiling, or the underside of a staircase directly above the bed is one of the more serious errors in Vastu. It is believed that the weight of these structures directly above the bed exerts a low, continual pressure on the sleeper. The most commonly associated effects are restlessness and headaches, as well as a general feeling of being “weighed down.” If a beam is not avoidable, shift the bed placement to place the beam at the foot of the bed.

Placing the bed directly in line with the door. Some Vastu Shastra traditions refer to a bed placed this way as the “coffin position” and discourage it because of the belief that energy flows unimpeded out of the room, taking the sleeper’s restfulness with it. This position is also avoided because of the same reasons as placing a mirror on a wall that is directly in line with the bed.

A mirror facing the bed. This is a very common layout mistake, and for good reason. It is one of the easier mistakes to correct. In this layout, a mirror reflects a sleeping body, adding/multiplying unstable energy in the room, disrupting sleep, and, according to traditional readings, straining relationships.Hang the mirror on a north or east wall that is not in line with the bed, or cover it with a drape of some kind.

Placing the bed diagonally or in the exact centre of the room. This layout disrupts Vastu’s goal of even, settled energy flow, and a bed placed in the exact center of the room leaves no “Anchor Wall” behind the bed, which is believed to make a person feel exposed, and ungrounded. A bed should be parallel to walls, with the headboard in line with a wall.

If you’d rather go deeper into the sleeping-direction side of this specifically – the magnetic-field reasoning and a direction-by-direction breakdown – our dedicated guide on the best direction to sleep as per Vastu covers that in more detail than we will here.

Ideal Bed Direction by Family Member

Vastu doesn’t apply the same bed direction to every person in the house — it adjusts based on who’s sleeping in the room and what that room is meant to support.

Bedroom OccupantRecommended Bed CornerWhy
Master bedroom (head of household)South-WestStability, authority, strong relationships
Children / studentsWest or EastEast sharpens focus and concentration; West supports steady, disciplined growth
Elderly family membersSouth or South-WestCalm, grounding energy that supports rest and health
GuestsNorth-WestEncourages movement and a comfortable but temporary stay
Working professionalsWestAssociated with career growth, ambition, and follow-through

This is a starting point, not a strict set of guidelines, as the shape and orientation of your actual rooms will always take priority over a recommendation that applies to a general case. When you are determining which member of the family will occupy which bedroom in a new home, this hierarchy is a genuinely useful tie-breaker.

What If You Can’t Change Your Bed’s Direction? (Remedies for Rentals & Fixed Layouts)

Most don’t own their walls. This doesn’t stop portions of Vastu from working in your favor, even if an apartment restricts your ability to have your bedroom arranged your preferred way. For example, if the placement of your room’s door, windows, or wires in your apartment forced you to place your bed in the southwest corner, Vastu would suggest you place your bed in the south west corner.

  • Rotate the headboard, not the whole bed. If the location of some stationary features of your room restricts the placement of your bed, that in itself sometimes allows you to change your sleeping direction horizontally without having to move features such as plumbing or wiring.
  • Use a heavy headboard against the “wrong” wall. If you really can’t use south or west, an anchoring effect can be at least partially achieved by using a heavy, solid headboard against the wall.
  • Address what you can’t move. Not everything used to improve the situation can be perfect. Blocking features in your room that cannot be avoided or moved, like a beam, can at least be softened by a panel on a false ceiling. A door in line with your bed can be disguised by your wardrobe.
  • Correct the mirror regardless of everything else. Of all these remedies, adjusting a mirror that reflects the bed is the one with no disadvantages, and can be done with ease.
  • Weight the south-west corner of the room even if the bed can’t sit there. A heavy wardrobe, bookshelf, or chest of drawers in the south-west corner can help compensate for an anchoring bed in the rest of the room, since it anchors the heaviest energy in the room’s preferred direction.

None of these remedies require breaking a lease or a renovation budget – they’re adjustments within the room you already have.

Is South-West the Best Direction for the Master Bedroom?

Yes. Of the eight directions, in which a bedroom can exist in a house, Vastu always recommends the south-west direction for the master bedroom. It has the Prithvi (Earth) element, providing stability and grounding. This has a positive effect on the head of the household, the household as a whole, and the relationships of household members. If the house design offers a choice, the south-west direction should be the first preference, and south the second.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the ideal height for a bed according to Vastu?

According to Vastu, a bed either needs to be too high or too low. A bed which is slightly off the floor allows the air to circulate below the bed and hence is recommended. It is said that stagnant air below the bed breaks the flow of energy in the room.

Can husband and wife sleep in separate rooms according to Vastu?

Vastu doesn’t frown upon this arrangement, but it recommends that couples share a room when possible. Each partner having their own room isn’t considered a Vastu violation, but is the arrangement least preferred and the least recommended.

Where can I learn how to apply all of this properly, not just follow a checklist?

A structured degree course in vastu shastra online is the fastest way to move from following bedroom tips to actually reading a floor plan and applying Vastu principles to any room, not just the bedroom.

Bringing It Together

Vastu says it is not about the position of the bed. It is a combination of the position of the bed in the room, the direction that the head is facing when it is in the bed, the wall behind the head and to which side the head is facing. The south-west corner, a solid wall behind the head, and a south or east facing head is suitable. Everything else (mirror, beam, familial table) is then placed from there.

Final Thoughts

Creating a Vastu-compliant bedroom is not about rigidity, it is more about designing spaces that help you to feel grounded, rested and meet your needs for the flow of energy. While the South – West corner of the room with your head pointing south or east with the bed is the recommended spot, pragmatism also plays a very important role and so do architectural constraints like fixed doors and wiring positions and lease agreement terms.

Vastu systems make a lot of assumptions and where they do many intentional and thoughtful corrections become possible. Balance can easily be achieved in the room without major work as most of these corrections are cosmetic in nature. Heavy furniture in the South – West corner, the use of a solid headboard to direct and give the anchor effect, and even redirecting or masking/covering misplaced mirrors can be some of the many thoughtful corrections you can make. When you do create this grounded space, you are actually establishing a restoration and focus supportive space that is geared to provide you long term well being.
